Campsite Description
A friendly welcome is assured at this first class campsite. It enjoys a wonderful setting, with views across to the hills and direct access to a beautiful, long sandy beach. Playa Joyel has a wide range of well-maintained amenities, including two tennis courts and a superb bar and restaurant. There is also a take-away in high season. An underground disco operates every night in July and August and is always popular with teenagers, while the site's animal park is a hit with younger children. The campsite is flat and the grassy pitches (which customers can usually select on arrival) vary in size. Location: Camping Playa Joyel is conveniently situated opposite the beach and just over 1km from the centre of Noja. This site is also close to the ports of Santander and Bilbao. Around & about: If you are in need of a rest, just lie back and soak up the warmth of the Spanish sun on one of the beautiful stretches of sandy beach along the Cantabrian coast. Children will love fishing and snorkelling in the huge rock pools that are exposed at low tide and there are spectacular views from the headland. Cantabria also brings you much of Spain's rich folk culture and Noja is close to the richly historic port of Bilbao, home of the internationally acclaimed Guggenheim museum.

Our recent holiday sufficient
The campsite has very good facilities (great shops (one for groceries and newspapers and another selling camping equipment if you've forgotten anything) knowledgeable if slightly unfriendly reception staff and clean bathrooms and toliets. When we had our holiday, the other campers were mainly Spanish, with a few English, French, Dutch and Germans-most people were friendly and respectful of others' space and privacy. However, this is a lively site and the Spanish habits of doing everything a bit later than is usual in England (eating, going to bed)meant that on occasion, there was some noise late at night. The pitches are quite large, but as most campers are families with either large tents or caravans, it can seem quite cramped. So, if you are looking for space, and peace and quiet, this is not the campsite for you. The reception staff will let you choose an alternative pitch if you don't like the one you are allocated on arrival-this didn't help us much though as the site was almost full when we were holiday in early August. The on-site restaurant was quite over-priced for the quality of food on offer so if you like eating out, there are better value places in the town or further afield. We would recommend hiring a fridge on site-the freezer for putting ice packs in was very inefficient (ie the blocks were not frozen after 24 hours in the freezer)and our blocks were stolen on one occasion. On a more positive note-the beach nearby is excellent and when the sea is calm, offers great swimming. Other good beaches nearby are to found at Laredo. Bilbao and Santander are very interesting places for a day out, if you like museums, shopping or just people watching. We enoyed the maritime museum in Santander (and just wandering around the city) and the Guggenheim in Bilbao is a must for art-lovers.
